So, 1 year on….where are we?
The amazing support
When we launched Flexology a year ago, one of our key initiatives was to show to employers in the South West the support for more roles with flexible schedules. Our focus is on permanent roles with flexibility, either in hours eg part time, term time, school hours or in schedule, for example home/office split.
Since then we have spoken directly to hundreds of people keen to show their support for flexible work and we currently have over 500 people registered with us and actively looking for a flexible position. This grows every week.
We would like to thank you for this support, it has been instrumental in helping us to show employers in the South West the calibre of candidates they are missing out on by not offering more flexibility. In fact, we note that of the roles that we have recruited over the last year, 50% were flexible because we consulted with the employer, helped them to understand the benefits of flexibility and how to introduce it into the role. Had we not existed, and had your support, then neither would these flexible positions. With your continued support this number will only grow.
Advice and support for our network
It is key to us that we support people in the South West who are working or would like to work flexibly. We offer free advice to candidates who register with us on anything from how to approach a conversation with a current or potential employer on flexible working, through to how to prepare or improve a CV and covering letter, interview confidence and many other topics. In fact, in the last year we have spent 243.5 hours advising people, many of whom were not applying for a role via Flexology.
In addition, we ran our first event, to help candidates who work in marketing and HR and would like to work 3 days per week to understand how to approach a job share and find a job share match. We intend to run more of these events in the next year, focused on different industries. We know that 26% of our network would like to work 3 days per week so keep an eye out for these.
In addition, we hope to run other events such as our event in May on Developing Business Confidence. Look out for more information on this in the coming weeks.
All our events will continue to be run at low cost, to ensure that they are inclusive.

Growing client base
We have a fantastic client base of businesses invested in developing and nurturing their people. They understand the importance of flexible working in attracting and retaining teams with the best skills and then maintaining their wellbeing through a healthy work life balance.
Across our client base we worked on 45 flexible positions last year, which outshone all our expectations of our first year. Our client base grows month by month.
We have helped our clients across a number of different industries to develop and recruit positions with a range of flexibilities, including:
- Job sharing
- Part time - 3 or 4 days per week
- Full time compressed into 4 days per week
- Full time with a home / office split
We have also placed candidates who have taken a career break.
These clients have seen tangible benefits when compared to recruiting and employing solely full time staff, for example being able to fill skills gaps and improve retention. In addition, they have happier and healthier staff - it is a no brainer!
They see the benefit of our co-founders' 30 years + combined experience of building and growing large teams in senior professional positions. This makes us uniquely positioned to understand the views and requirements of our clients and candidates. Our honest and targeted approach, saves our clients time and ensures that our candidates can always trust that we represent them fairly.
We have a great relationship with our clients and have had some lovely feedback this year, which includes:
“You have saved me time and found me great candidates who are all doing so well in their roles” - Flexology Client Sept 17
“The candidates have settled in so well, it is like they have been here forever and they are enjoying their flexible roles. Flexology are great at being human and not like “recruiters”, you understand our needs and send us well qualified CVs and candidates are well prepared for interview” - Flexology Client Aug 17
Continuing the campaign
In the next year we will be continuing our campaign to increase awareness of flexible working and the benefits to business. Sadly, the number of flexible roles available today are still far too low - for example of the 3923 permanent, £24k+ roles advertised on Reed today in Bristol, only 82 are advertised as part time, around 2%. If you search for flexible roles the number is higher at 650 or 17%, but we feel this is falsely inflated by some larger businesses who advertise all roles with flexibility when in fact it is often the case that internally hiring managers may not share the same view. It is still far too low - we believe the majority of roles should be offering flexibility not the small minority.
We know that we are already making a tangible change to this dynamic and this will only accelerate as we grow.
Please help us to spread the word!
We love to hear about your experiences of flexible working - whether it is how you negotiated flexibility in your role, how you make your flexible role work or difficulties you are having finding a flexible role, if you have a story that you think will help others please do get in touch as we would love to share it.
If you know anyone looking for a flexible role, please do ask them to register with us at flexology.co.uk
You can also join us on Facebook (@flexologysouthwest), LinkedIn (Flexology), Twitter (@flexology_sw) and Instagram (flexology_sw) for news and information on flexible working and of course details of all roles we are recruiting.
