Mid Weight Developer

Our Client, the market leader in Cloud software in Education, is recruiting a Mid Weight Developer, due to the continued growth of their business.

They are currently in the process of rewriting their existing products and also of creating new systems that take advantage of the latest technologies in both PHP and Javascript, focusing specifically on Laravel/Symfony and React/Vue.JS, they currently use Drupal 7 but will be moving away from this by the end of 2020.

Our client are flexible employer and whilst this is a full time role, are happy to consider different working patterns for example with later or earlier start or finish times as well as regular home working and they are open to discussion on other flexibility for the right candidate.

Salary is £36,000 to £42,000 depending on experience.

About the role

In order to continue their system transformation and to help them maintain their position as a market leader in the higher education sector, they are seeking a developer with experience at the front end of Drupal 7 and 8 or Laravel/Symfony and at the Back End with React/Vue.JS. For Drupal Devs, they are keen to find someone wanting to retrain as they move away from the product in future.

With a small Dev team, there are opportunities to get involved in some great projects;

  • Bringing new apps and products to market
  • Rewriting existing products
  • Modernising development - including further development of their automated testing and continuous deployment

There will be heavy investment in your development, including on the job training and qualifications leading to official certifications as well as hackathons to learn and experiment with new technologies. As well as career development opportunities.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • 3+ years of professional programming experience
  • Fluent in at least one of the following OOP languages: PHP, Javascript, Ruby, Python, Java
  • Used to one of the following other PHP frameworks: Drupal, Zend, Laravel, Symfony
  • Familiar with one of the following JS frameworks: Vue.js, React.js, Angular.js
  • Familiar with CSS Pre-Processors
  • Familiar with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL


  • An understanding of the benefits of unit testing
  • Experience of working in an Agile environment
  • Used to working in a collaborative environment, including code reviews and supporting the wider development team

Additional Nice to haves

  • Knowledge of VirtualBox and/or Docker
  • Familiar with with ORMs (Preferably Doctrine 2)
  • Proficient writing unit tests using PHPUnit
  • An understanding of SOLID principles
  • An understanding of REST
  • An understanding of Flux / Redux
  • An understanding of Elasticsearch
  • Familiar in one of the following Javascript libraries: Ramda, Lodash, Underscore
  • Proficient writing unit tests using Mocha, Sinon, Chai
  • Experience of working in a Scrum team
