Quantity Surveyor

Fully flexible role (full or part-time); 3-5 days per week, home/office split, core, school or compressed hours with a leading manufacturer of interior fit-out units for the construction industry.

Our client, based in Highbridge, Somerset, is expanding and is now looking to appoint a qualified and experienced Quantity Surveyor to assist with the contract management. Working with large scale and varied developments across the UK and with contracts valued up to £10 million it will be an interesting role at an exciting time of this companies growth.

You must have experience working within main-contractors or developers so you completely understand their processes and procedures. Be an excellent communicator with energy and enthusiasm. Have a strong drive for progression. Be able to quickly spot anything that doesn’t look right, investigate it thoroughly and follow through to completion.

About our Client

Based in Highbridge, Somerset, our client is a leading manufacturer of interior fit-out units for large commercial building projects across the UK.  Working closely with main-contractors and developers across a wide range of sectors; student accommodation, apartments, hotels, retirement homes, healthcare, MOD and care homes, they supply over 10,000 units a year.  The units are prefabricated for easy installation - constructed off-site, locally and work on a modular design so can fit all kinds of spaces and styles.

The business forms part of a family owned group of companies which has been manufacturing products and supplying the building industry for more than 60 years. It employs about 250 people across 3 sites. Experiencing significant organic growth in the last few years they are now able to choose their projects carefully, which range in value from £250k - £10m and continue to build upon their success.

About the role

Due to growth, this Quantity Surveyor role is a new position to work alongside the existing person and report directly to the MD. They will also work closely with the clients and all sections of the business from the factory floor to the sales team, designers and finance. 

The management of the contract process is being shared between the two people with the existing person taking charge of the front end/set-up of the contracts and this role managing the back end/completion of the contracts.  In particular, dealing with the final accounts and picking up on any issues that require resolving and seeing them through to completion.

This role can predominantly be undertaken from the office with occasional site visits required.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assisting the sales team on commercial and contractual elements of the contract

  •  Attendance at meetings to discuss the commercial elements of the project

  •  Review of Contractors terms and conditions

  •  Setting the contract sum position and amending accordingly with any variations

  •  Negotiation of the purchase order terms and ancillary documents

  •  Review of specifications and scope of work included in purchase order

  •  Commercial analysis of contracts

  •  Assisting accounts with contract sum build up

  •  Organising and negotiating collateral warranties as requested

  •  Ascertaining variation costs and informing the Contractor

  •  Updating the Contractor on project progress (design and production)

  •  Negotiations and discussions with the Contractor on disputes

  •  Assisting accounts with applications for payments/invoices

About you

Must-haves:

  • 3 Years+ RICS PQE ideally but right person more important

  • Main Contractor experience. You will have seen first hand the client side of this job so you know what and who you are dealing with, the processes and correct procedures etc.

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office products

  • Ability to learn new inhouse software

  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings

  • Confident decision maker and problem solver

  • Keen eye for detail

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to work well under pressure as an individual and as part of a team and work without supervision
